The philosopher Don Alfonso seduces the officers Ferrando and Guglielmo into a wager: all women are unfaithful, consequently also their friends Fiordiligi and Dorabella. To prove it, Alfonso wants to introduce the two ladies to each other's husbands. For a long time, the gentlemen lull themselves into the security of their respective girlfriends' love. But Alfonso, supported by the maid Despina, knows: He who laughs last laughs best! What begins as a harmless game of disguise ends unexpectedly for the new couples at the altar! And although in the end Don Alfonso is revealed as the "guilty" author of the bet, none of the characters emerges unscathed from this game.
Composed in 1789 and premiered in January 1790, Così fan tutte marks an important turning point. It is Mozart's last collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte and the last opera Mozart commissioned during the lifetime of Emperor Joseph II. However, it is also Mozart's first stage work after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the political repercussions of which were only felt at the Viennese imperial court after some delay, but were nevertheless the subject of lively discussions in the imperial household.
