A double project with two directly contemporary chamber operas (together with The Raven by Toshio Hosokawa, (see Projects) shows quasi crossover moments of cultural encounter between Asia and the Western world.

The German composer Christian Jost (*1963) has travelled repeatedly to the People's Republic of China since the 1990s and has also worked with various Chinese orchestras. For the 2012
commissioned by the Taiwan International Festival, he took up a short story and the poem "The Love of a Falling Leaf" by the Chinese writer Zhang Ailing, but he also deals with the Chinese musical tradition in his compositions. The plot of "Heart Sutra" takes us to Shanghai in the 1930s and tells a mysterious love story between four people with surprising correspondences.
